Freedom Ride – Downtown Bend

by whatthebend on June 15, 2011

Update (6/29/11): As of now, the plan is to meet at Pioneer Park at 2pm – ride will start around 2:30. The ride will end at Miller’s Landing.

The Freedom Ride. Freeeeeeeeedom!! An annual 4th of July tradition since 2001. Hundreds of bikes taking over the streets of downtown Bend. Costumes, flags, music – it’s not sanctioned by the city, but the Bend Police Department has been known to help direct traffic.

There are some that are annoyed by the clogged downtown streets and question why these people and their bikes allowed to do this. People need to remember that Bend is a great place, and odd events like this are part of what make it great. Not to mention that bikes are only downtown for about 15 minutes.

From the Freedom Ride Facebook Page, here is a picture from the 1st annual ride:

And it’s grown from there. Here are a few other pictures from 2010′s ride to give you an idea of what it’s all about. Note: **All images below are compliments of the great work from Jill Rosell Photography**

This video from the 2010 Freedom Ride gives you a good sense for how big it is:
